SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

1st September  2011

Apologies for the lack of E - newsletters over the past few weeks but we have had a technical problem with our group emailing system.

 MAINTENANCE WEEK

 Monday 12th September

Greens – 1st & 11th to 18th will be scarified, over sown and top dressed.  These holes will be closed until further notice.

If the weather allows, work will continue on to the remainders of the greens where temporary greens will be used while works are being carried out.

Tuesday 13th September

The above work will continue to complete the Devonshire and then the Hartington.

 Wednesday  14th – Friday 16th September Inclusive

Any work that has not been completed on Monday or Tuesday will be carried out during the rest of the week.

General:

Aeration will follow using 10mm solid tines.  The scarifying this year is important as there has been an increase in the fibre layer due to the wet winter of 2010.  It will also give an opportunity to introduce some more desirable grass species to the sward that are more drought tolerant and less susceptible to disease attack.  The greens at the moment are predominantly annual meadow grass which does produce a good surface for some of the year but has its downside.

Shallow rooted – poor drought tolerance.

Very prone to disease - Seeds below cutting heights - Requires higher nutrient imputs.

Our aim is to introduce a species exchange over the years to higher percentages of Browntop bent which has superior shoot density, drought tolerance, disease resistance and performs better through the winter.

 Staffing News

Everyone will be sad to hear that Karen in the office has decided to leave us to spend more time with her children.  We are pleased to welcome back Maria, who you may remember from working here in 2010.

Harveys Trip Thursday 22nd September

We have an “evening  trip” organized to the Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes.  Harvey’s is best known for its range of traditional ales which can be sampled on the day plus the opportunity to stock up on beers, fine wines and premium spirits. As we only have 25 places available, please show your interest by putting your name(s) on the sign-up sheet on the notice board.

Invitation to a Special Dinner at the Royal on Friday, 7th October, 7.00 for 7.30 pm.   Open to all Male Members

Following our third Harvey’s Challenge golf competition, sponsored by the brewery, in the afternoon Miles Jenner, Head Brewer of Harveys will be our guest at the Royal for a very unusual dinner featuring a range of specially selected Harvey’s beers one of which will be served with each course and at the pre-dinner reception.   Miles, a well known after dinner speaker, will introduce each beer in its historical context and make the evening as light hearted as possible.

He is the fifth generation of an uninterrupted line of brewers and has been awarded the title of Brewer of the Year by the All Party Parliamentary Beer group (2001) and the Guild of Beer Writers (2000) and received a special award from CAMRA for ‘outstanding services to the beer industry’.   During his service Harveys have won more than 60 national and international awards for its beers.

We will enjoy a traditional English meal including Sussex Smokies and Steak and Ale Pie specially prepared by our popular new chef Lee.

The price of the meal including the various beers and service is only £22-00 and cheques should be made payable to Bryan Renn and mailed to 24A Rosebery Avenue, Eastbourne, BN22 9QA or placed in his pigeon hole.   Your male guests are also welcome.   Dress is smart casual.

There will also be a raffle on behalf of the Horder Centre specialist hospital in Crowborough and prizes include golf and lunch for two at Rye Golf Club and a voucher for a 36 pint Polypin of Harveys Best Bitter.  It is a privilege for the Royal to receive such a distinguished guest and I look forward to seeing you at what promises to be a memorable evening.
